A saw that will not hold a line is telling you something mechanical, not testing your steering

Operators blame themselves for a problem the machine is causing

American slab work runs until the concrete plants slow for the season, and every crew has a saw that has become difficult to steer. A concrete saw that wanders is almost always mechanically out of adjustment, and the operator has been compensating for it long enough to think it is normal.

A machine in good condition tracks its own cut. Once the blade is a few inches into the slab the kerf holds it, and the operator is guiding rather than fighting, which is how the work is supposed to feel.

Why does a concrete saw pull to one side has three usual answers

The first is the front guide. A pointer or wheel that has worked loose no longer sits over the line, so the operator is steering to a reference that has moved and the cut follows wherever they aim it.

The third answer is the arbor, and it is the expensive one

Bearings on the blade shaft that have developed play let the blade wander sideways under load. That widens the kerf, produces a cut with a curved wall, and puts a bending load into a blade that was never designed to take one.

A blade forced sideways stops cutting properly

Diamond segments cut on their leading face. Once a blade is running at an angle, the sides of the segments rub, which generates heat, wears the segments unevenly, and eventually loosens them from the core.

Concrete saw blade depth is limited by the engine as well as the blade

Concrete saw blade depth is limited twice over. Blade diameter sets the theoretical maximum, and available power sets the practical one. A 6.5 horsepower concrete saw driving a large blade at full depth is asking for continuous output it does not have, and the result is a stalled engine or a glazed blade.

Belts are the failure people diagnose as engine trouble

On a 6.5 horsepower concrete saw a slipping belt loses blade speed without any change in engine note, so the operator hears a healthy engine and feels a saw that has stopped cutting. Tension and glazing are worth checking before anything more serious is suspected.

Symptoms divide by where they come from

•Pulls to one side: guide, wheels, or arbor play

•Stops cutting: belt slip or glazed segments

•Stalls at depth: too much blade for the power

Cut quality is being treated as a maintenance question
